Historic Mansions in Missouri
People are often surprised at the number of historic mansions in Missouri. These massive estates rival mansions anywhere in America.
Why So Many Mansions in Missouri
There are several reasons for the significant amount of wealth in the early years of our state. Beer barons, railroad magnates, banking executives, and manufacturing leaders all came to Missouri in the late 1800s and early 1900s. St. Louis had the founders of department stores who lived in the city, which attracted banking and financial institutions. Kansas City was full of wealthy landowners and cattle barons who controlled commerce during westward expansion. That is not to mention the wealth of mining executives and leaders of media outlets. Even St. Joseph reportedly had the most millionaires per capita of any city in America in 1900.

The one thing that is for sure is that these homes are opulent and scattered across the state. This is a list of some of those homes that have survived the years, even though some now have a different purpose.
