I seem to write this same story every single year, yet here we are again. Another college basketball season has come and gone in Missouri and we have no teams to root for in March Madness. I don’t mind that Mizzou always seems to lose in the first round. But I do mind that none of the players on the roster are actually from Missouri again this year.
I have talked with coaches and basketball gurus across the state and they all tell me the same thing; “Mizzou doesn’t recruit our best kids.” That is sad. It is one thing if our Missouri high school prep stars decide to play somewhere else to get a new experience. But it’s another issue if they don’t get recruited by their state university.
When I write this annual story, I hear from a bunch of peole that say there aren’t enough big-time players from Missouri anyway. That is certainly not true as you can see from this list.
| Name | College | Ht, | High School | Backstory |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tarris Reed, Jr | UConn | 6’11 | Chaminade | Missouri Class 6 Player of the Year 2021 |
| Kael Combs | Iowa | 6’4″ | Nixa | Missouri Class 6 All-State in 2022 and 2023 |
| Bennett Stirtz | Iowa | 6’4″ | Liberty | Missouri Class 6 All State in 2021 and 2022 |
| Cam Manyawu | Iowa | 6’9″ | KC Staley | Missouri Class 6 All State in 2023 |
| Kennard Davis | BYU | 6’6″ | Vashon | Missouri Class 4 All State in 2023 and 2024. |
| Cam’ron Fletcher | High Point | 6’6″ | Vashon | Missouri Class 4 Player of the Year 2020. Two-time State Champion. |
| Trevon Brazile | Arkansas | 6’10” | Kickapoo | Missouri Class 6 All-State 2021. Won Class 6 State Championship. |
| Coach Ben McCollum | Iowa | Coached at Northwest Missouri State for 15 years. Won 4 D-2 national titles. |
Also keep in mind that Iowa has a couple more Missouri Prep stars on their roster. So Iowa may be a team for Missourians to watch for the next few years.
If this map from MaxPreps doesn’t make Mizzou fans ask some serious questions about recruiting, I’m not sure what will!
