Missouri’s Tower Rock Emerges

A “Once In A Lifetime” Experience, Four Years In A Row

Tower Rock is one of Missouri’s most intriguing natural landmarks — steeped in history, legend, and dramatic scenery. And it is attracting tourists once again to Perry County.

Sightseers on Tower Rock in the Mississippi River

The rock in the middle of the Mississippi River is normally surrounded by water, jutting 60 feet above normal river levels. But during drought years — like what we have seen every year since 2022 — it becomes reachable on foot from the Missouri side. And every time it happens, the small town of Wittenberg is the place for hikers to start.

Historical Context:

This massive rock has been a part of Mississippi River lore for centuries. It was infamous among river pilots as they had to act quickly to avoid the river hazard. In fact, Native Americans and early French explorers all noted its unusual shape. Even Lewis and Clark wrote about it. The Corps of Discovery recorded Tower Rock in their journals in 1803 as they headed upriver.

How to Get There:

If you want to get to Tower Rock Natural Area, get ready for a road trip. As you can see from the Google Map image below, this area is very remote. The closest city is Cape Girardeau. But if you are looking for a Missouri memory, it might be the perfect holiday drive this year.
