The Castle In the Ozark Mountains

Mystery in the Ozarks: Missouri’s Unfinished Goliath

This is the story of the Pensmore Mansion, a modern-day fortress and a testament to ambitious (and highly complex) dreams.

Key Facts & Controversy:

A Near-Demolition Drama: The project’s owner, frustrated by the legal and construction challenges, at one point stated publicly that he wanted the massive structure torn down, believing it was not built as strong as originally intended. However, after the lawsuits against the materials manufacturer were concluded, construction ultimately resumed. The mansion still stands, and though its completion date is uncertain, it remains the most fascinating (and legalistically challenged) “castle” in the Ozarks.

Missouri’s Giant: The Pensmore Mansion is undisputed as the largest home in Missouri. Its size is overwhelming, covering over 72,000 square feet. This makes it larger than the White House (54,900 sq ft).

A Remote Citadel: It is located near the small town of Highlandville, tucked away in the deep, wooded Ozark Hills. Although it is mostly hidden, the structure can be spotted from Highway 65, the main route between Springfield and Branson, by those who know what to look for.

The Blueprint for a Fortress: Construction began in 2009. The sprawling structure was designed with 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. The main goal was to be a highly resilient “safe-havens” build. It was constructed using novel concrete building materials designed specifically to be earthquake and tornado proof.

A History of Legal Storms: The building process has been anything but smooth. It has been the center of multiple lawsuits over the years. Some of these lawsuits involved the very concrete building materials that were supposed to be its ultimate strength.
