Pensmore Mansion

Missouri Mansions Series

The Castle In the Ozark Mountains

The Pensmore Mansion is the biggest home in Missouri, although the massive structure has never actually been completed. It’s located in the Ozark Hills near the small town of Highlandville.  The elaborate castle is hidden away in the woods. But you can see it from Highway 65 between Springfield and Branson (if you know where to look.)

The castle is more than 72,000 square feet, which makes it one of the largest houses in the United States. To put that into perspective, the White House in Washington DC is a mere 54,900 square feet.

According to building records, construction on the home with 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms began in 2009. But the home has been involved in several lawsuits. Some of the suits involved the concrete building materials which are designed to be earthquake and tornado proof.

Several news outlets have profiled the construction of the castle over the years. One of those stories include the fact that the owner once stated that he wanted the structure torn down because it wasn’t built as strong as initially intended. But construction continued following the conclusion of the lawsuits against the materials manufacturer.
